What Is PADI eLearning and How Does It Work?

If you’re thinking about learning to scuba dive — or picking up where you left off — you’ve probably come across the term eLearning. It sounds straightforward enough, but there’s often confusion about what it actually includes, what it doesn’t, and whether it’s the right approach for you.

This guide covers everything you need to know about PADI eLearning: how it works, which courses are available online, how long it takes, and what happens next once you’ve finished the theory.

What is PADI eLearning?

PADI eLearning is the online knowledge development component of PADI scuba diving courses. Instead of sitting in a classroom with a manual and a DVD, you work through the theory portion of your course on any internet-connected device — at home, on a lunch break, or on the plane to your dive destination.

The material is delivered through PADI’s own interactive platform and includes video, reading, knowledge reviews, and a final exam. Once you’ve completed it, you receive a digital completion certificate which you hand to your instructor when you begin the practical part of your course.

The key thing to understand is that eLearning covers the theory only. It’s one component of a full PADI certification — not the whole thing.

What does PADI eLearning include?

The specifics vary by course, but every PADI eLearning programme gives you access to:

  • Interactive video and reading content, broken into manageable sections
  • Knowledge reviews at the end of each section to check your understanding
  • A final exam (required to complete the eLearning stage)
  • 12 months’ access to all materials, including a digital version of the course manual
  • A completion certificate to present to your instructor

What it does not include: confined water training (pool sessions), open water dives, or your final certification card. Those are completed with a PADI instructor at a dive centre.

Which PADI courses are available as eLearning?

Most of the popular PADI courses have an eLearning option. Here’s a quick breakdown by level:

Beginner and core courses

  • Open Water Diver — The starting point for most divers. Covers the fundamentals of dive physics, equipment, and safety. Takes around 8–10 hours to complete.
  • ReActivate — A theory refresher for certified divers who haven’t dived in a while. Covers 20 sections including dive computers, boat diving, and aquatic life.
  • Advanced Open Water Diver — For certified divers ready to dive to 30 metres. Seven online sections covering deep diving and underwater navigation.
  • Rescue Diver — Covers rescue psychology, diver stress management, and accident procedures. One of the most in-depth and rewarding courses PADI offers.

Speciality courses

A wide range of PADI speciality courses are available online, including:

  • Enriched Air Nitrox (PADI’s most popular speciality)
  • Peak Performance Buoyancy
  • Deep Diver
  • Wreck Diver
  • Drysuit Diver
  • Night Diver
  • Underwater Navigator
  • Digital Underwater Photography

At Big Squid we can help you complete the practical sessions for all of these once you’ve finished the online theory — whether you’re based in London or visiting from elsewhere.

Professional courses

The Divemaster and Instructor Development Course (IDC) also have eLearning components, covering the theoretical foundations you’ll need before beginning supervised practical training.

How long does PADI eLearning take?

It depends on the course, but as a rough guide:

  • Open Water Diver: approximately 8–10 hours
  • Advanced Open Water: approximately 3–5 hours
  • Rescue Diver: approximately 4–6 hours
  • Speciality courses: typically 1–3 hours each

You have 12 months from purchase to complete the online portion, and there’s no requirement to finish in one sitting. Most people spread it across a few evenings, which works well — the knowledge tends to stick better that way.

eLearning vs classroom — which is better?

This is one of the questions we hear most often at Big Squid. The short answer is that neither is objectively better — it depends on how you learn.

eLearning works well if you prefer to work at your own pace, want to get the theory done before your course weekend, or are fitting it around a busy schedule. You can pause, rewind, and revisit sections as many times as you like.

The traditional classroom approach — working through the manual with your instructor present — suits people who prefer to ask questions as they go or who find self-directed online study less engaging.

In practice, the content is identical. The eLearning completion certificate is accepted by every PADI dive centre in the world, so whichever route you choose, your certification carries exactly the same weight.

Do I need to buy eLearning through a specific dive centre?

No. PADI eLearning is purchased directly through the PADI store and is universally recognised by all PADI dive centres. It doesn’t matter where you buy it — the course content and your completion certificate are identical regardless.

That said, it’s worth checking with your dive centre before buying, as some include the eLearning cost within their overall course fee. At Big Squid, we’ll always be clear about what’s included in your course price and what you might need to purchase separately.

What happens after you finish your eLearning?

Once you’ve completed the online portion and passed your final exam, you’ll receive a digital completion certificate from PADI. You bring that to your first session with an instructor, who’ll go over any questions before you head into the water.

From there, the course moves into confined water training — typically a pool — where you’ll practice the core skills in a controlled environment. After that comes your open water dives, usually at an inland dive site or in the sea depending on your location and course.

For Open Water students, we typically run the pool sessions at our facility in London, then head out to Vobster Quay in Somerset or Swanage in Dorset for the open water dives. It’s a genuinely enjoyable weekend, and by the end of it you’ll have a full PADI Open Water certification recognised worldwide.

Is PADI eLearning worth it?

In our experience, yes — particularly for people with limited time to dedicate to a full classroom day. Getting the theory out of the way in advance means your time in the water and with your instructor is spent entirely on practical skills, which is where the real learning happens.

The interactive format also tends to be more engaging than a printed manual for most people, and the ability to study on your phone during a commute or at the kitchen table after dinner makes it genuinely flexible.

The one caveat: make sure you actually engage with the material rather than clicking through to complete it as quickly as possible. The theory underpins everything you’ll do underwater, and a solid understanding of it will make you a safer, more confident diver.

Frequently asked questions about PADI eLearning

Can I do PADI eLearning on my phone?

Yes. The PADI eLearning platform works on desktop, tablet, and mobile. You’ll need a reliable internet connection to stream the video content.

Can I buy PADI eLearning as a gift?

Yes. PADI eLearning courses can be purchased as gifts. The 12-month access period begins when the recipient activates the course, not when you buy it.

Is PADI eLearning accepted everywhere?

Yes. PADI eLearning is the same content worldwide and is accepted by every PADI dive centre. There is no difference between eLearning and classroom-based theory in terms of how your certification is recognised.

What if I don’t pass the final exam?

You can retake the exam. PADI’s platform allows multiple attempts, and your instructor will be happy to go over any areas you’re unsure about before you try again.

Does eLearning expire?

You have 12 months from purchase to complete the online portion. Your PADI certification itself does not expire once issued — although it’s always worth a refresher if you haven’t dived in a while.
