Scuba Diving at Swanage Pier with Big Squid
Swanage Pier is one of the UK’s most celebrated shore dive sites and a firm favourite with the Big Squid team. Tucked into the sheltered sweep of Swanage Bay on the Jurassic Coast, the pier’s timber piles are draped in colourful marine life year-round, making every dive a genuine wildlife encounter.
Why dive Swanage Pier?
Few UK dive sites punch above their weight quite like Swanage Pier. The sheltered bay keeps conditions manageable for divers of all experience levels.
At the same time, the pier structure itself acts as an artificial reef, attracting an astonishing variety of species to what is, in places, only 5–8 metres of water. Visibility regularly exceeds 5–10 metres in summer, and the site is diveable on most tides.
Whether you’re a newly qualified Open Water diver looking to log some relaxed UK dives or an experienced diver wanting to brush up on marine life ID and underwater photography, Swanage Pier delivers every time.
What will you see?
The marine life at Swanage is exceptional for a UK site. Past Big Squid dives here have turned up:
- Cuttlefish
- Spiny Seahorse
- Nudibranch
- Wrasse
- Pollock
- Bib
- Conger Eel
- Edible Crab
- Spider Crab
- Starfish
- Blenny
- Pipefish
- Plaice
- Lobster
- Squat Lobster
Spring and early summer are particularly special — cuttlefish gather under the pier to breed, and patient divers may be rewarded with close-up encounters with pairs displaying their extraordinary colour-changing skin.

Getting there & parking
Swanage is easily reached from London in around 2.5 hours via the A31/A35 through Dorset. There is paid parking close to the pier at the Swanage seafront. Big Squid does not provide transport, but we’re happy to help coordinate shared lifts among group members on a fuel-share basis. Just let us know when you book.
Who is this trip for?
The Swanage Pier day trip is open to qualified divers of all experience levels from Open Water upwards. Maximum depth is around 8–12 metres, depending on the route taken, making it a superb option for newer divers building their first UK experience, or for those returning to diving after a break. If you’d like to join but haven’t dived for a while, ask us about combining the trip with a Scuba Refresher.
The site is also excellent for PADI speciality courses, including Peak Performance Buoyancy, Enriched Air Nitrox and Dry Suit
Trip details
This is a day trip, typically comprising two guided dives at Swanage Pier. Our dives follow the pier out and back, exploring the pylons, sandy seabed channels, and kelp fringes.
Briefings are given before each dive. We will provide you with a qualified buddy, and a Big Squid team member will be on-site throughout.
Cancellation & safety
Weather cancellations: Swanage is a sheltered site but conditions occasionally make diving unsafe. If we need to cancel due to weather, the full trip cost is refundable.
Cancellation policy: Cancellations before the balance due date are refundable once your place has been filled by another diver. Cancellations after the balance has been paid are non-refundable until your place is sold.
Trip safety: Please follow all briefings and instructor guidance in and out of the water. Dive within the limits of your certification, experience, and comfort level at all times.
